let Him in

I was at the grocery store this morning.  An old man came up to me and asked me if this boy in my carriage (shopping cart-Boston lingo) was my toddler.  A little hesitant as to why a man would ask me if this was my son, I replied "yes he is".   He then smiled and put something in my hand.  He said to get him something nice for Christmas.  I looked down and I had money in my hand.  I told him I could not accept it.  He replied "please, it's Christmas time, a time of giving.  I want to give."  I graciously took the money, and told him thank you.

I once had a friend tell of an experience where she was reminded that as we are eager and looking to serve others, it is also important to let others serve us.  She had a friend who asked her if she could do something for her and my friend kept telling her no, you are the one in need of service.  Her friend then replied, "Will you rob me of the blessings of service?"

(My new addition to Christmas decor this year)

My heart is so full this morning.  I was so taken back and grateful to this man for his act of kindness, and as it happened I felt so strongly to let this man do his service.  Later, I looked to see how much he gave me, thinking it would be $10-20, and how gracious that was of him.  It was $50.  Thanks to this man I spent my entire grocery shopping crying.  I hope that this man is reaping blessings beyond measure from his generous act of kindness.  He may never know how much he touched my heart.  I pray he feels joy the amount of gratitude I have for his example.

We tried explaining to my son this year that we are celebrating Jesus' birth.  Porter exclaimed his excitement with a "Happy Birthday Jesus! Surprise!"  I admire his attitude and in all reality I strive to have the same excitement over the birth of our Savior.  Maybe a little more reverent, but it is still a time of great rejoicing.  His birth has brought more joy to this world then anyone else.
Christ is the perfect example of service.  We need to accept and rejoice in His unconditional service by sharing this love with others. This old man gave me the gift to let Christ in my heart today. (Thank you)
